Do you need to step out of your comfort zone to make BIG things happen in 2020?
At the beginning of every year, most people start to make their New Year\’s Resolutions in the hopes of forming better habits that will improve their lives. Unfortunately, most people end up abandoning their pursuit well before the cold winter months transform into Spring.
Before we dig in, let\’s talk about what a habit is. Truth be told we are seeking a personal or a business transformation of replacing one bad habit with a good practice. Habits are not a destination, and you did not arrive there one day, it most likely took you many years to get into the pattern you are struggling to replace. Habits are tiny steps that we each need to make every day, which will lead to the small wins. Many small wins lead to BIG wins!
The key to transformation is being kind to ourselves along the way. The journey will be difficult. If it were easy, we all would be doing it. You can expect to hit some obstacles along the way.
Here are three things that you need to have to ensure your aspirations become habits and not just another passing fancy.
Start Where You Are
Experts at Psychology Today recommend waiting to develop new habits until your life is somewhat in order. Their reasoning is that if you are already stressed, trying to work on some other form of personal development might make it difficult for you. Good habits generally take 21 days. I say, START WHERE YOU ARE. Wouldn’t starting small right where we are be more encouraging than waiting for the “right time”? If we can experience one small win we will be encouraged to set another small goal. So if you waiting for your life to be in order you may be waiting a long time.
Start by Focusing on one Single Good Habit at a Time
Forming good habits can be challenging. Patterns are things that are deeply ingrained in our behavior, which is why it can be so challenging to quit a bad habit. Starting up a good habit can be just as challenging and is going to require you to put in a lot of hard work and conditioning before it becomes an automatic behavior. If you try to change too many things at once, you may be setting yourself up for failure. It’s best to focus on just one good habit at a time, even if it is small, and move onto the others later on. Step out of your comfort zone!
Slowly and Steadily Work Yourself into It
You may have the goal of doing something every day, but it is highly unlikely that you are going to be able to reach that goal immediately. Accountability, self-discipline, and time for conditioning is required; don’t get upset if you happen to miss a day in the beginning. You need to begin to ramp up the habit gradually if you want to be successful in forming a new pattern. Step out of your comfort zone!
To form new habits, you have to set goals for yourself and step out of your comfort zone. Set a different goal each week to keep you motivated without getting overwhelmed. The more consistently you can stick with your new habit, the more you\’ll want to keep going, and before you know it, you\’ve changed your life for the better.
